MassHousing Aids Hamilton Project
Among the many reasons to support professional city management is that stability is important to our economic development. Investments in projects like the Hamilton Canal are difficult without that stability.
Lowell Revitalization Aided by $33 Million from MassHousing
MassHousing committed up to $33 million in financing for the redevelopment of Appleton Mills Phase 1A and 1B, key components of the Hamilton Canal District redevelopment now underway in downtown Lowell. The MassHousing financing will support the historic rehabilitation and conversion of the Appleton Mills complex into 130 units of affordable housing specifically targeting artists but open to individuals and families with modest incomes.
Appleton Mills, located on a 2.3-acre site on Jackson Street, is significantly deteriorated, and its restoration is a high priority for the city of Lowell and the National Park Service. When completed, the development will include 35 studio units, 29 one-bedroom units (two of which are townhome style), and 66 two-bedroom units (six townhome style).
The Hamilton Canal District redevelopment, when complete, is expected to produce 11 new LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified buildings, four rehabilitated historical buildings, 725 units of housing, 55,000 square feet of retail space, 425,000 square feet of commercial/office space and a community theater.
