City Council Endorsements

The Move Lowell Forward Political Action Committee is pleased to announce its endorsements for positions on the next Lowell City Council.  We have performed an extensive evaluation of the candidates, including soliciting their ideas, policies and positions on matters we feel are important to the City of Lowell as we move forward. 

The endorsed candidates are:

Incumbents Kevin Broderick, William Martin, and James Milinazzo; challengers Franky Descoteaux, David Koch, Joseph Mendonça, Patrick Murphy, Ben Opara, and Raymond Weicker.

The key factors considered in our analysis support a vision for Lowell’s future that includes:

  • A Professionally Managed City Government
  • Renewed Economic Growth to Stabilize Finances
  • Opportunities Provided by Local Jobs
  • Effective Public Services
  • A High Quality of Life
  • A Strong Educational System
  • Affordable Standard of Living
  • Safe, Clean Neighborhoods
  • Efficient Transportation
  • Accessible Commercial Enterprises

The candidates that we have selected have expressed general support to the following:

  • Professional City Management in accordance with the Plan E Charter
  • Stable taxes enabled by revenue from growth and better control of government costs
  • More job opportunities through partnership with the higher education institutions and commercial development within the City
  • More efficient use of public resources to provide better service at lower cost
  • A recognition of the value of a better educated citizenry to improve quality of life and attract better jobs
  • Prudent use of external funds to enable affordable housing, while ensuring that zoning codes fully respect the character of the neighborhoods
  • Engaging the citizens throughout the city to make it more attractive and safe through public/private cooperation
  • Improved transportation options, including better pedestrian ways, bicycle options where feasible, and a general elimination of unsafe and bottlenecked traffic locations
  • Readily accessible commercial enterprises to support each neighborhood and the city as a whole without overbuilding and complicating the traffic situation

Move Lowell Forward PAC has released a document entitled Considerations for a City Manager Contract for the City Of Lowell, MA (download PDF here). The document is a set of ideas based around the PAC's stated mission, on ways a City Manager contact might incorporate goals and measurements in the evaluations that could help determine a performance-based contract with the City Manager.
